1/13/2019

1/13/2019 - Sunday

Today we spent the morning resting and getting organized and Laura and Francis went for a scuba dive.  At 1330 hours Nolan picked us up and took us to Tsariki village for a presentation to the village chiefs about our last years research results.  After arriving, we were taken on a short hike to look at some WWII airplane wreckage (mostly it was used to kill time until the chiefs were available)!  Then we went back to a outdoor meeting hall and Francis gave a presentation about our work and the results we got from last years tagging.  I introduced our team and told them about HPA and the importance of the students to the research efforts (Francis translated for me).  There were lots of questions and concerns over outsiders coming in and taking their resources and they seemed genuinely interested in promoting a conservation effort for the hawksbills.

It was a realy different kind of experience for the students and I think they came away with a nice feeling about what we are doing and about the Vanuatu people we meet.

Chief Kamelu on the left as we get ready to present T shirts to the men and women present.

Francis talking about last years results (he speaks Bislama well).

Laura making friends with all the children of course.
